Dr. Leslee Cochrane and Third District Supervisor, Jeff Stone.

Dr. Cochrane has always had a deep desire to work with people in their own setting, whether through mission work, or clinical practice. His focus when developing a plan of care for the patient must be one that works for the “real” environment in which the patient and family live.

Dr. Cochrane was previously named 2006 Physician of the Year by the California Association for Health Services at Home. Since that time he has worked tirelessly to continue providing education to the community on medical topics of interest through his “Ask the Doctor” column which appears in numerous local publications, as well as his “Ask the Doctor” forums held throughout the community. Dr. Cochrane has also visited physician offices throughout our service area to educate physicians and their staff on issues related to hospice care.

During November 2009 Dr. Cochrane traveled with a missionary group to Burma to participate in the Community Health Worker training, where he taught a week long course on Shock and Trauma to the 61 students in the class. His course was one of the last classes of their 6 month training after which the students returned to their villages to serve as Community Health Care Workers. And this month he is traveling to Haiti to provide desperately needed medical care to those who have suffered from the devastation of the earthquake.

Dr. Cochrane is one of the rare, quiet physicians. He never has a harsh word and is authentic in his interactions with everyone. He is trusted by those in his care, and by those with whom he works. His professionalism, ethics, and integrity are known by all with whom he comes into contact and he is a model and mentor in his role. He can be heard many times day repeating the following phrases – “What does the patient most want?” “Let’s get the best result for the patient.” “Always err on the side of the patient.” “Do the right thing.” These phrases say more about Dr. Cochrane than I ever could. He is most deserving of this award and would be a distinguished recipient.
